Gum Disease Linked to Alzheimer’s
A recent scientific study published in “Science Advances” indicates a potential link between the bacteria that causes gum disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Researchers analyzed brain tissue, saliva and spinal fluid, finding evidence of gum disease causing bacteria. A toxic enzyme secreted by the bacteria was also found in brain tissue, with higher levels in individuals exhibiting Alzheimers symptoms or pathology. The researchers also found that in the presence of the gum disease associated bacteria, higher levels of the components of amyloid plaques were found. Those plaques are associated with Alzheimer’s.
This information follows the research over the past decade that seems to link gum disease and heart disease. Although further research needs to be done, it seems clear that good oral health has a positive impact on your overall health, possibly including heart and brain health. This is just one more great reason to have regular dental visits and don’t forget to floss !
