Foods for a Healthier Smile
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry recently published a free e-cokbook with the help of nutritionist Karen Krchma. The cookbook provides some recipes using ingredients that are considered to help promote healthy smiles. Some of the foods mentioned include :
Basil: a natural antibiotic, reduces bacteria in the mouth.
Broccoli: forms an acid-resistant film on teeth that can help prevent enamel erosion.
Carrots: full of Vitamin A which is absolutely necessary for the formation of tooth enamel. This and all crunchy vegetables also cleanse and stimulate your gums, making them healthy.
Cheese: offers the benefit of lactic acid to help prevent tooth decay.
Celery: activates saliva production which assists in cleansing food particles from the teeth and dilutes sugars or acids in the mouth. Chewing celery also massages the gums.
Ginger: an anti-inflammatory to support healthy mouth tissue.
Green tea: contains an antioxidant called catechin which reduces bacteria growth that causes gingivitis. Keep in mind that tea can also promote some staining of your teeth.
In addition, some research has indicated that enzymes in pineapples can help breakdown plaque and acts as a natural stain removal. Probiotics in yogurt have been reported to be beneficial to gum health. Hard fruits and vegetables have some natural cleansing benefits. None of this is a surprise, but it is nice to know that, based on a variety of reports, a typical healthy diet will be just as good for your smile as it will be for your heart. Brush, floss, have regular dental care and eat a healthy diet to maintain your optimal smile.
